The OWLS Dragonflies will race this weekend in the Portland Dragon Boat Race held on September 8 and 9 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.  Please come by to cheer for us during races or to say hello between races. 

The Portland Dragon Boat Race is in its sixth year and is expertly organized by Dragon Sports USA.  Official race results will be reported real-time at Portland Dragon Boat Race on Facebook or @pdxdragonboat on Twitter.

The ‘Flies have been assigned to the middle section of Tent 10, which will be near the intersection of SW Naito and SW Columbia; look for our OWLS Dragonflies banner and purple jerseys as you enter Waterfront Park.

Our first race is at 8:50 on Saturday morning.  Check back here for updates and race times for the second race on Saturday and the races on Sunday. If you are unable to attend the races, please feel free to show your support in the comments.

On Saturday, July 14, the OWLS Dragonflies will compete in the Kent Cornucopia Days Dragon Boat Races on Lake Meridian in Kent, Washington. Twenty-four Dragonflies will travel to Kent to race against teams from Oregon, Washington, Canada and Australia. 


Races begin at 9:00 a.m. and we will again be posting updates as the day progresses.  Paddles up!

Grab a picnic and sunscreen on your way to the race. Semifinals promise to be exciting and you might even see some photo finishes.

We're seeded 3rd (out of 22)! We race in Quarterfinals Heat 53 at 9:39 a.m. with Dragon Ladies, Tsunami Sisters, and River City Dragons.

Tough competition and tough water! Sunday is going to be a great day of racing, and we will need our friends and family on shore cheering us in.

We're hoping to race three heats, but we have work to do to earn a chance to race in the afternoon.  We'll be racing in lane four in the morning, which has a strong current. Paddles up!

The teams placing 1st and 2nd and the two fastest teams placing 3rd in each Quarterfinal heat will advance to Semifinals.

The teams placing 1st and 2nd in each Semifinal heat will advance to Finals.

Finals, Women’s Division 1, Heat 83 at 3:36 p.m.

The OWLS Dragonflies will race this weekend in the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race held on June 9 and 10 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

WHAT:
The Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race is unique in that each team’s flag catcher is required to pull the flag from a buoy in that team’s lane, which is what signals that the team has finished the race heat.
WHEN:
Saturday, June 9
Race times appear as scheduled.
It is possible that the race will run ahead or behind schedule.

• Round 1, Women’s Division, Heat 4 at 8:57 a.m.
• Round 2, Women’s Division, Heat 27 at 1:45 p.m.

Sunday, June 10
Specific race times on day 2 will be determined by the results on Saturday.
Only qualifying teams from Semifinals will race in Finals.

• Quarterfinals, Women’s Division, Heats 48-53 at 8:54-9:39 a.m.

WHERE:
On the Willamette River located at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, immediately South of the Hawthorne Bridge. There are several convenient parking garages off of SW 1st Avenue between Jefferson and Harrison.

The ‘Flies have been assigned to Tent 44, which will be near the intersection of SW Naito and SW Columbia.  

If you are walking toward the river on Columbia, bear to your left as you enter Waterfront Park and look for our Dragonfly banner and purple jerseys. 

On Saturday, May 12, the OWLS Dragonflies competed in the Rainier Dragon Boat Festival on Commencement Bay in Tacoma, Washington. The 'Flies arrived at Thea's Park before 8:00 a.m. for their first race of the 2012 season. Most of the team drove up Saturday morning after leaving Portland at 5:00 a.m. The 'Flies took an early lead in their first round race, finishing first with a time of 02:28:30 and shaved six seconds off that time in their second round race for a second place seeding going into the semi-final round.

By afternoon, the tide had turned and race times started getting longer, but the 'Flies were ready for the longer sprints having spent the Winter training for endurance in all conditions on the Willamette River.  Winter paddling paid off in the semi-final round and the 'Flies advanced to finals where they took 2nd place from the improbable lane 1 where the current is particularly challenging.

The OWLS Dragonflies will race next in the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Race held on June 9 and 10 at Tom McCall Waterfront Park, so please mark your calendar and plan to spend some time by the river cheering for the ‘Flies.

After a 5th place finish in the women's division at the Portland Dragon Boat Race, the OWLS Dragonflies decided to do one last race in 2010 for a good cause.

On Sunday, October 3, the OWLS Dragonflies will be participating in Portland's Row for the Cure event (paddling, of course), a benefit for Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. Donations may be made online here. Please indicate your team/affiliation as "Dragonflies."

Your donation helps make it possible for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to assist patients and families in Oregon & SW Washington. Of the funds raised, 75% stays local to educate about breast cancer and early detection, provide information and support to breast cancer survivors and their families, fund mammograms for women who are uninsured or underinsured, and fund transportation and treatment support for survivors. The remaining 25% of funds are disbursed to the Komen National Grant Program to continue funding groundbreaking research to find a cure.
